Websites for electricians: what they need, what they cost

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet.

This page is for you if you run an electrical business in Austria, whether you work alone or have a small team. Your customers usually search when something is urgent: a fault, a renovation, a new photovoltaic system. Then they want to know quickly whether you work in their area and how to reach you. That's exactly what many electricians' websites lack. The phone number is tucked away in the footer, the service area isn't mentioned anywhere, and the form only asks for a name and a message. So you end up chasing every enquiry by phone. Then there's the Impressum (legal notice): as a regulated trade, you need more than just your name and address. That includes your chamber, professional title, a reference to the Gewerbeordnung (GewO, Trade Regulation Act) and the supervisory authority. Here you'll see which pages an electrician's website needs, which mandatory details belong in the Impressum and what the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) means for you.

Mandatory information for electricians

„Elektrotechnik (§ 94 Z 16 GewO 1994)“ is a regulated trade (reglementiertes Gewerbe). Responsible body at the Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce): Landesinnung Elektro-, Gebäude-, Alarm- und Kommunikationstechniker der WKO Steiermark (division Gewerbe und Handwerk). On top of the general imprint (Impressum) details, your website needs:

  • Chamber membership: Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styrian Chamber of Commerce), Landesinnung (regional guild) Elektro-, Gebäude-, Alarm- und Kommunikationstechniker
  • Professional title: Elektrotechnik (trade), awarded in Austria
  • Reference to professional regulations: Gewerbeordnung (GewO, Trade Regulation Act), available at www.ris.bka.gv.at
  • Supervisory authority: the responsible trade authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat at your location)
  • UID number (VAT ID), if you have one; Firmenbuch (company register) number and court, if registered

What else belongs in the imprint depends on your legal form: Impressum (legal notice) for sole traders (EPU) and e.U., Impressum (legal notice) for a GmbH, Disclosure under § 25 MedienG and Impressum under § 24 MedienG.

Contact form and enquiries: Does the Accessibility Act apply?

A typical electrician's website with services, projects and an enquiry form is an information site. According to the WKO, the BaFG (Accessibility Act) does not apply to pure information sites with no way to order or book; whether a contact form alone is enough is disputed, says the WKO. If you let private customers book appointments online (e.g. an E-Check) or run a shop, you are within its scope. As a micro-enterprise (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total), you are exempt for services, according to the Sozialministeriumservice.

Common mistakes on electrician websites

  • You only write “electrician” in the Impressum (legal notice) instead of giving your trade, Elektrotechnik, as your professional title together with the country that awarded it.
  • The supervisory authority is missing, or you name the WKO instead of the trade authority (BH or Magistrat).
  • Your phone number only appears at the very bottom in the footer and can't be tapped on a mobile.
  • You list services such as photovoltaics or alarm systems without a service area. Customers don't know whether you'll come to them.
  • The enquiry form asks nothing about the property or location. You have to ring back about every enquiry.
  • You show stock photos instead of your own sites and switch cabinets.
  • You embed Google Fonts or maps without consent, and your cookie banner doesn't really ask.

Frequently asked questions

Is Elektrotechnik a regulated trade?

Yes. Elektrotechnik (electrical engineering) is on the list of regulated trades in § 94 Z 16 of the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act). So you need a certificate of competence to register the trade. For your website, this means: in the Impressum (legal notice) you state your professional title, the country in which it was awarded and a reference to the Gewerbeordnung with a link to ris.bka.gv.at.

Which authority do I put in the Impressum as the supervisory authority?

According to the WKO, for trade businesses it's the trade authority. Depending on your location, that's the Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district authority) or the Magistrat (city authority). The Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce) is not a supervisory authority. The chamber goes in the Impressum (legal notice) as a separate item under chamber membership, ideally with the name of your Landesinnung (regional guild). What's meant is the authority where your trade is registered.

Does my electrician's website have to be accessible?

The Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) has applied since 28 June 2025 to consumer services in electronic commerce, such as online shops or online bookings. According to the WKO, pure information sites with no way to order or book are not covered. Whether a contact form alone is enough is disputed. As a micro-enterprise with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total, you are exempt for services.
