Websites for plumbers: what they need, what they cost

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet.

You run a plumbing and heating business in Styria, for sanitary, heating, ventilation or all of them. Your customers are private households, property managers and construction firms. Anyone who lands on your site usually has a specific problem: a pipe is dripping, the heating isn't working, the bathroom needs redoing. These people want to know within seconds whether you work in their area and how to reach you. The most common mistake: exactly these two things are missing. The phone number is small in the footer, there's no emergency number, and the service area isn't mentioned anywhere. On top of that, the enquiry form has no photo upload, so you have to call back about every little thing. Under the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act), gas and sanitary technology and heating and ventilation technology are regulated crafts. That's why your professional title, Landesinnung (regional guild), the reference to the Gewerbeordnung and your trade authority belong in the Impressum (legal notice). Here you'll find what your site needs.

Mandatory information for plumbers

„Gas- und Sanitärtechnik (§ 94 Z 25 GewO 1994); Heizungstechnik; Lüftungstechnik (verbundenes Handwerk) (§ 94 Z 31 GewO 1994)“ is a regulated trade (reglementiertes Gewerbe). Responsible body at the Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce): Landesinnung der Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Lüftungstechniker (WKO Steiermark) (division Gewerbe und Handwerk). On top of the general imprint (Impressum) details, your website needs:

  • Chamber membership: member of the Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styrian Chamber of Commerce), Landesinnung (regional guild) der Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Lüftungstechniker
  • Professional title: e.g. Installateur, Gas- und Sanitärtechniker or Heizungs- und Lüftungstechniker, awarded in Austria
  • Reference to professional regulations: Gewerbeordnung 1994 (GewO, Trade Regulation Act), available at www.ris.bka.gv.at
  • Supervisory authority: the locally responsible trade authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat)
  • For a GmbH or KG: Firmenbuch (company register) number and court
  • Optional: state your master craftsman title
  • The same information, complete, on Facebook, Instagram and other profiles too

What else belongs in the imprint depends on your legal form: Impressum (legal notice) for sole traders (EPU) and e.U., Impressum (legal notice) for a GmbH, Impressum (legal notice) for OG and KG, Impressum (legal notice) on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and co., Disclosure under § 25 MedienG and Impressum under § 24 MedienG.

Contact form and enquiries: Does the Accessibility Act apply?

According to the WKO, a pure information site with a phone number and services doesn't fall under the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (BaFG, Accessibility Act). If a private customer can book an appointment or place an order through your website, the act can apply since 28 June 2025; what matters, says the WKO, is whether a consumer contract is initiated or concluded. As a micro-enterprise with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual turnover or annual balance sheet total, you are exempt for services. If you only work for business customers (B2B), the BaFG doesn't apply anyway, according to the WKO.

Common mistakes on plumber websites

  • The emergency number is only in the footer or missing altogether.
  • Nowhere does it say which districts and towns you work in.
  • The enquiry form doesn't allow photo uploads. You have to ring back about every little thing.
  • Your projects show stock photos of designer bathrooms instead of your own work.
  • Apprenticeships and open jobs are missing, although you're looking for people.
  • Information on funding for replacing a heating system is out of date and undated.
  • Your Impressum (legal notice) is missing the professional title, Landesinnung and the reference to the Gewerbeordnung.

Frequently asked questions

Which trade licence do I need as a plumber?

That depends on what you do. The Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act) lists “Gas- und Sanitärtechnik” (gas and sanitary technology) in § 94 Z 25 and “Heizungstechnik; Lüftungstechnik (verbundenes Handwerk)” (heating technology; ventilation technology, linked craft) in § 94 Z 31. Both are regulated, so you need a certificate of competence. Which combination suits your business is best clarified with the Landesinnung der Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Lüftungstechniker (regional guild) at WKO Steiermark.

Does my plumbing website have to be accessible?

In many cases, no. According to the WKO, a pure information site with no booking or ordering option doesn't fall under the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act). Neither do sites aimed exclusively at businesses. Micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual turnover or balance sheet total are exempt for services. If you're larger and private customers can book or order online, you must make those parts accessible.

What goes in the Impressum if my business is a GmbH?

In addition to company name, legal form, registered office, contact and UID number (VAT ID), you need your Firmenbuch (company register) number and the register court. Then come the details under § 5 ECG (E-Commerce Act): the chamber you belong to, your professional title and the country in which it was awarded, a reference to the Gewerbeordnung with access to it, e.g. via ris.bka.gv.at, and the supervisory authority. According to the WKO, that's the locally responsible Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district authority) or the Magistrat.

As a plumber, do I need an Impressum on Facebook?

Yes. According to the WKO, the information requirements of the E-Commerce-Gesetz (E-Commerce Act) apply to every form of electronic content, including social media. The details must be complete on every profile you use to promote your business. That also applies to careers pages on Facebook or Instagram that you use to find apprentices and skilled workers.
