Websites for carpenters: what they need, what they cost

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet.

This page is for you if you run a carpentry business in Austria. Maybe you build kitchens, fitted wardrobes or doors, maybe you do complete interior fit-outs. Your customers buy with their eyes. First they want to see what you've already built, then they want to send an enquiry. The most common mistake on carpenters' websites: the photos aren't your own, or there are so many unsorted images that nobody can find their way through. On top of that, the form only asks for a name and a message. Then dimensions, plans and location are missing, and you have to ring back about every enquiry. The Impressum (legal notice) is often underestimated too. Tischler (carpenter) is a regulated trade. That's why your chamber, professional title, a reference to the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act) and the supervisory authority belong in it. Here you'll see which pages a carpenter's website needs, what goes in the Impressum and what the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act) means for you.

Mandatory information for carpenters

„Tischler (§ 94 Z 71 GewO 1994: Tischler; Modellbauer; Bootsbauer; Binder; Drechsler; Bildhauer (verbundenes Handwerk))“ is a regulated trade (reglementiertes Gewerbe). Responsible body at the Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce): Landesinnung der Tischler und Holzgestalter der WKO Steiermark (division Gewerbe und Handwerk). On top of the general imprint (Impressum) details, your website needs:

  • Chamber membership: Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark (Styrian Chamber of Commerce), Landesinnung (regional guild) der Tischler und Holzgestalter
  • Professional title: Tischler (trade), awarded in Austria
  • Reference to professional regulations: Gewerbeordnung (GewO, Trade Regulation Act), available at www.ris.bka.gv.at
  • Supervisory authority: the responsible trade authority (Bezirkshauptmannschaft or Magistrat at your location)
  • UID number (VAT ID), if you have one; Firmenbuch (company register) number and court, if registered

What else belongs in the imprint depends on your legal form: Impressum (legal notice) for sole traders (EPU) and e.U., Impressum (legal notice) for a GmbH, Disclosure under § 25 MedienG and Impressum under § 24 MedienG.

Contact form and enquiries: Does the Accessibility Act apply?

Most carpenters' websites show projects and have an enquiry form. According to the WKO, the BaFG (Accessibility Act) does not apply to pure information sites with no way to order or book; whether a contact form alone is enough is disputed. If you sell furniture or vouchers online to private customers, that is a service in electronic commerce. As a micro-enterprise (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover or balance sheet total), you are exempt from this, according to the Sozialministeriumservice.

Common mistakes on carpenter websites

  • Your gallery is hundreds of unsorted photos in full resolution. The page takes ages to load on a mobile.
  • You show furniture from manufacturers' catalogues or stock photos instead of your own work.
  • The enquiry form has no field for dimensions, plans or photos. You have to follow up on every enquiry.
  • Your Impressum (legal notice) is missing the professional title, chamber or supervisory authority.
  • You don't state a service area. Enquiries come from places where you don't even fit.
  • Apprenticeships and jobs are only on social media, not on your own website.
  • Images have no descriptions, and text is only inside graphics.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tischler a regulated trade?

Yes. Under § 94 Z 71 of the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act), Tischler (carpenter) is a regulated trade, as a linked craft together with model makers, boat builders, coopers, wood turners and sculptors. So you need a certificate of competence. That's why, in your website's Impressum (legal notice), you state your professional title, the country in which it was awarded and a reference to the Gewerbeordnung.

Which guild belongs in the Impressum?

In Styria, it's the Landesinnung der Tischler und Holzgestalter (regional guild of carpenters and wood designers) of WKO Steiermark, in the crafts and trades division. According to the WKO, the E-Commerce Act requires you to state the chamber you belong to. So you write Wirtschaftskammer Steiermark and ideally add the Landesinnung. As the supervisory authority, you name the trade authority, i.e. the BH (district authority) or Magistrat.

I want to sell vouchers or furniture online. Does my website then have to be accessible?

According to the WKO, selling to private customers through your website is a service in electronic commerce and in principle falls under the Barrierefreiheitsgesetz (Accessibility Act), which has applied since 28 June 2025. However, micro-enterprises that offer services are exempt. These are businesses with fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual turnover or balance sheet total. If you only sell to businesses, the act doesn't apply.
