KMU.DIGITAL and other federal funding for digitalisation

Draft. This page has not been editorially reviewed yet. The legal review is still pending.

You are looking for federal funding for your website or digitalisation project? The best-known programme is KMU.DIGITAL, run by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the WKO (Chamber of Commerce), with the implementation grant handled by the aws (Austria Wirtschaftsservice). The most important news first: according to kmudigital.at, the KMU.DIGITAL 4.0 budget is fully used up, and applications for consulting and implementation are currently not possible (checked on 14 October 2026). This page still sets out the rules of the last phase, because they show how federal digitalisation funding is typically structured: first a funded consultation, then implementation, application before the first euro of costs, minimum and maximum project costs. That way you can quickly judge whether a new programme fits your plans. Important for website projects: mere content or design updates to a website were excluded under KMU.DIGITAL, and so, in principle, were ongoing operating costs. Also check the page for your federal state, where some programmes of their own are running.

How Weblux does it

We keep an eye on whether the federal government launches a new digitalisation programme and update this page. Until then, we look at your federal state’s programmes with you. We cannot promise funding; that is decided by the funding body.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still apply for KMU.DIGITAL now?

Not according to kmudigital.at. It says there that the KMU.DIGITAL 4.0 budget is fully used up and applications for the consulting and implementation grants are no longer possible. The site does not say whether or when there will be a new phase. Check kmudigital.at or ask your Wirtschaftskammer (Chamber of Commerce).

What did KMU.DIGITAL 4.0 fund?

Consulting by certified consultants in four areas: business models and processes, e-commerce and online marketing, IT and cyber security, and digital administration. Status and potential analyses were funded at 80 per cent, strategy consulting at 50 per cent, together up to €3,000. Implementation came with a 30 per cent grant, at most €6,000, for project costs of €2,000 to €30,000 excl. VAT.

Was a new website eligible under KMU.DIGITAL?

Partly. According to the FAQ on the implementation grant, website updates affecting only content or design were excluded, as were costs for search engine advertising. Projects in e-commerce and online marketing could be funded if they went beyond a mere redesign. A completed funded consultation was always a requirement.

From when were costs allowed to be incurred?

According to the FAQ on the implementation grant, no costs or services could be incurred before the recognition date, i.e. the day of application. The documents for settlement had to be submitted no later than two months after the project was completed. This rule is typical: most state funding programmes also require you to apply before the project starts.
